Two Surf Sessions a Day, Every Day You're Here
Every morning you get a two-hour coached surf lesson in the water with an instructor, followed by an hour of theory and video analisys. Groups are maximum of four guests per instructor at Level 1, and a maximum of three at the reef breaks, this means more waves caught, more corrections made, and an instructor who actually knows what you did wrong on the last one.
Then at 4pm, our hosts paddle out with you for a guided free surf session — no formal instruction, just water time with someone who knows the break, doing the thing you learned that morning while it’s still fresh.
Video and photo analysis — you watch your own technique on a big screen, which is a faster way to understand what your back foot is doing than any amount of describing it. Surf dynamics in the gym covers pop-up practice, balance, body control and the mechanics underneath every manoeuvre. Pool sessions let you drill board control in flat, calm water. And general theory covers the classroom material — how waves form, how to read a lineup, tides, surf etiquette, and the safety knowledge.
A Coaching Path, Not a One-Off Lesson
Surfers at Elsewhere progress through a structured three-level system:
Level 1 — Beach Surfer is where you start if you’ve never surfed, or if you’ve had a few lessons and still feel like you’re guessing. You’ll learn on soft-top foamies in the whitewater of Weligama Bay, working on paddling, positioning, timing and the pop-up, with an instructor in the water beside you the whole time.
Level 2 — Reef Surfer is the jump most surfers find hardest and the one good coaching shortens the most. You move onto green, unbroken waves, learn to go both right and left and start developing wave selection — sitting in the right spot, picking the right wave, and knowing when to let one go.
Level 3 — Power Surfer is where you’ll learn to drive off your bottom turn to hit the lip, build fast rail-to-rail surfing, and link manoeuvres smoothly instead of doing one good turn.
Guiding — Advanced Surfer is for surfers who don’t need instruction, but local knowledge. Our guides read the wind, tide and swell each morning to match them to your level and take you there.
Our surf team is a mix of international and Sri Lankan surf instructors — perfect blend of local knowledge combined with ISA standards.
Where You'll Surf
Weligama Bay and the South Coast Breaks
We sit 50 metres from Weligama Bay, which is the best beginner wave in Sri Lanka and a two-kilometre sheltered bay with a sandy bottom, producing soft, consistent, waist-to-chest peaks that break both left and right. There’s no reef to worry about and nothing to punish you for getting it wrong. It’s the main reason nearly half of our guests learn to surf here from scratch and start riding green waves within the week.
But you’ll outgrow the bay, and when you do, the rest of the south coast is a short tuk-tuk ride away. Transport to the surf spot of the day is included in your morning lesson, and we group people by level before we go.
Midigama, a few minutes west, is where most people make the sand-to-reef transition. Coconuts breaks over deep reef with both lefts and rights and is a genuinely soft introduction to reef surfing. Lazy Right does the same job in one direction.
The Rock, near Ahangama, is a world-class A-frame reef peak that throws both ways, with an easy beach break alongside it for anyone not ready for the main event. It’s one of the few spots on the coast that genuinely works for every level at once.
Mirissa is fifteen minutes east: a protected bay with a right-hand point, great spot for intermediate surfers.
What's Included in your surf package
Everything in this section is already in your nightly rate. Nothing here is an upsell.
